The waters are displaced by trade winds blowing over the ocean.
During La Niña, colder water from deep beneath the ocean surface rises up to fill the gap left by west-moving warm water.
Because this colder water is less likely to evaporate and form clouds, Peru and Ecuador experience drier weather, while flooding is more likely in Indonesia and Australia.
During El Niño, droughts become more common in the western Pacific, while Western South America experiences a higher chance of heavy rainfall.
Changes in the circulation of water and air move jet streams in the Americas, affecting global weather patterns.
