Jean-Paul Sartre worked on 'Being and Nothingness' while a prisoner of war
The Nazis invaded France in May 1940. Sartre, as a member of the French Army, was taken prisoner that June. While he was in captivity, he studied Martin Heidegger and worked on "Being and Nothingness," one of his most famous philosophical works.
