When Kennedy became president, the US was perceived to be losing the space race. The speech, now commonly referred to by its iconic line, "We choose to go to the moon," was delivered to a crowd at Rice University to instill a sense of urgency and support for the Apollo program.
The lectern Kennedy used is now on display at the Space Center in Houston.
