  1. Found orphaned at Bethel Point, Maine, in 1971, Hoover began exhibiting speech mimicry around his fifth birthday, with evidence suggesting the phrases acted as breeding songs directed to female seals.

  2. The vocalizations were an example of vocal production learning, in which animals learn to produce new sounds through exposure rather than explicit training.
