The Victor Talking Machine Company's logo, an iconic image used on early record players, was based on a painting portraying a dog mourning its dead owner.

The image was based on Francis Barraud's "Dog Look at and Listening to a Phonograph," later renamed "His Master's Voice," implying that the dog was listening to a recording of his master speaking so clearly that he mistakes it for the real thing.
The model for the photograph was named Nipper and was believed to be a mix of a Fox Terrier and a Bull Terrier.
In 1899, Barraud copyrighted the image, then sold it to Emile Berliner’s Gramophone Company, who eventually used it to market its Victor Talking Machine gramophones in America.
The image was used as a stamp of authenticity, with the company emphasizing its importance in its advertisements: “Look for the dog, on the horn, on the record, on the cabinet."
