The Hodag was a mythological animal—part reptile, part mammal, with spikes running down its back—invented by a 19th-century Wisconsin lumberjack-turned-con-artist who claimed he'd slain one after it attacked a child.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Wisconsin 101

  1. Eugene Shepard, a lumberjack from Rhinelander, Wisconsin, first reported the story in 1893 and sent a photograph of the supposed beast (after it had been killed with dynamite) to local newspapers, leading to a local panic.

  2. In 1896, Shepard claimed he'd slain another Hodag and displayed it in a dimly lit tent at the Oneida County Fair; later, it was revealed to be a set of pulleys and wires, operated by Shepard's workers, covered with animal skin.
