The studio opened in 1931 in a converted Georgian townhouse, and its first-ever recording was Land of Hope and Glory, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of composer Edward Elgar.
Engineer Alan Blumlein patented stereo sound recording in 1931 and used the technology at the studio to make the first stereo recordings of the London Philharmonic Orchestra a few years later.
The Beatles recorded most of their music there, including their 1969 album Abbey Road, whose cover photo turned the nearby crossing into a pilgrimage site for fans.
