Glass was hired in 1964 or 1965 to notate the music for "Chappaqua," a film for which Shankar was hired to score.
Glass' job was to write down Shankar's music for Western musicians while accurately representing Shankar's playing, an Eastern style that was often at odds with what he was studying with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.
Glass said he had difficulty accurately transcribing Shankar's music until he erased the bar lines—effectively the grid that measures Western music—which revealed the pattern embedded in the notes.
He began approaching music from both perspectives—Boulanger's and Shankar's, Western and Eastern—through his own music, something that would finally breakthrough to the mainstream with his 1976 opera "Einstein on the Beach."
