Philip Glass and his collaborator Robert Wilson began conceiving a show about a famous historical figure, considering Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler before deciding on Albert Einstein, a childhood hero of Glass.
Originally, they planned on calling the work “Einstein on the Beach on Wall Street,” but eventually shortened it to "Einstein on the Beach."
The work examines Einstein as a scientist, a humanist, and a musician, though it does so in a rather abstract way, relying on Wilson's visuals and Glass' music, along with intermittent monologues and elaborate choreography, to paint an impressionistic portrait.
Glass' music for the show used two techniques he'd long been developing: dizzying repetition and the slow, gradual addition of new features, a combination that built to remarkable, sometimes euphoric, revelations.
