  1. Director Robert Wilson says the performance has four acts, each with three themes, in a classical structure that he calls "theme and variation."

  2. Wilson notes that the number three was significant in both painting and music, with three kinds of perspectives and a three-count throughout much of Glass' music for the performance, making it an ideal number for the opera's themes.

  3. Glass and Wilson first met while Wilson was directing a 12-hour play called “Life and Times of Josef Stalin," and the two bonded over how their works, according to Wilson, "share a common sense of time."
