Harmful algal blooms can occur in warm, nutrient-rich, stagnant waters and are often associated with the rapid reproduction of blue-green algae—a misnomer for cyanobacteria, not algae.

Additional insights we found via US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

  1. Cyanobacteria, which produced the oxygen that made Earth's atmosphere breathable, were once referred to as algae because they are photosynthetic and form green blooms in freshwater that resemble algae.

  2. In saltwater, algae such as dinoflagellates and diatoms can produce red tides—toxic blooms that harm marine and human life.

  3. Rapid algal or cyanobacterial growth can be spurred by the deposition of phosphorus and nitrogen into waterways from sewage, fertilizer, or industrial runoff.
