Green algae have lived on Earth for about one billion years, roughly twice as long as the first plants.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Quanta Magazine

  1. Genomic analyses suggest that the development of adaptations to terrestrial environments, including protection against ultraviolet radiation and a root system, enabled plants to emerge over hundreds of millions of years from a common ancestor of green algae.

  2. Other research suggests some genes from soil bacteria may have been taken up by this ancestor to spur evolution.
