Hurricanes, which rely on air consistently spinning in the same direction, cannot cross the equator because air curves in opposite directions north and south of it.

Additional insights we found via Big Think

  1. The opposing movements of air are the result of the Coriolis effect, or the apparent deflection of material as it travels along a rotating surface.

  2. On Earth, the deflection occurs because the ground moves with different speeds at different latitudes—the greatest at the equator and zero at the poles.

  3. As air moves north or south, its speed no longer matches the speed of the ground beneath it, and Earth's surface moves ahead of or lags behind the air, causing it to appear to curve.

  4. This effect is why hurricanes spin counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere, and crossing the equator would require the hurricane to suddenly change its direction of rotation.

  5. At the equator, there is no deflection, so air is not spun up into a hurricane.
