NASA worries about the reactivation of dormant viruses during missions—particularly the virus that causes shingles—because spaceflight suppresses the human immune system and elevates stress hormones, making it more challenging to stay healthy.

Viruses like varicella-zoster virus, which causes chickenpox in childhood and shingles in adults, aren't fully eliminated from the body. Instead, they revert into a dormant state in nerve cells, which can reactivate.
If virus reactivation occurs, it often causes no symptoms, but in the confined environment of spaceflight, it could lead to an outbreak and weaken astronauts' immune systems, making them vulnerable to other ailments.
NASA has long studied both this potential threat and potential immune boosters to address it.
Studying this type of reactivation also provides insights about how the human immune system responds to the extreme environment of spaceflight ahead of projected long deep space missions.
