Additional insights we found via American Red Cross

  1. Blood types, which are inherited, are determined by the presence or absence of certain antigens. This categorization has implications for whether or not the human body would reject a blood transfusion from varying blood types.

  2. The presence or absence of two antigens on the surface of red blood cells helps to define the four major blood groups, but in addition to those two antigens (A and B), the presence or absence of the Rh factor protein is another blood type criterion.

  3. The eight most common blood types are: A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+, AB-. Those buckets are determined by whether each type has the corresponding surface-level antigens and the Rh factor proteins.

  4. "Universal" donor can actually mean different things. Someone with Type 0 negative blood can give red cells to any blood type, so those are typically thought of as universal donors since red blood cells are the most common type of transfusion.

  5. The universal plasma donor, however, has Type AB blood. Plasma is the liquid part of blood, and it's comprised of 92% water, though it also includes essential proteins, hormones, and enzymes.

  6. Rh factor, or Rhesus factor, is an inherited type of protein found on the outside of red blood cells. Most people are RH positive, meaning they have the protein.
