The movie was released in Germany in 1952: 10 years after its American release and seven years after the end of World War II.
The movie was released in the democratic West Germany, but references to Nazis were still considered taboo, so scenes were cut and dialogue was changed to avoid an unpleasant experience for audiences.
Jennifer Kapczynski, a former professor of German studies at Washington University in St. Louis, explained that the fear was that "showing characters from the Nazi past … might reawaken these lingering desires for a fascist history."
The edits made the movie 25 minutes shorter and stripped it of the magic that propelled it to so much acclaim elsewhere: Film historian Nils Daniel Peiler notes that "It was considered just a typical Warner Bros. B picture starring Ingrid Bergman."
