"Casablanca" was originally conceived of as a play by Murray Burnett and Joan Alison called "Everybody Comes to Rick's."
The play originally had Ilsa leaving her husband to be with Rick, but adultery was prohibited under the Hays Code, the moral laws dictating what could and couldn't be portrayed in Hollywood films, so the screenwriters knew the ending needed to be changed, though the production had already begun filming before they'd decided how.
The film's screenwriters were on call during shooting so that changes to the script could be made as needed, which especially frustrated lead actress Ingrid Bergman, though some film scholars argue that the actors' ignorance led to better, more realistic performances.
