  1. In 1950, Ingrid Bergman gave birth to Robin Rossellini, her son with director Roberto Rossellini, while still married to her first husband.

  2. The affair became a scandal, and on March 14, 1950, Sen. Edwin Johnson (D-Col.) criticized her behavior on the floor of the Senate, saying that the "Casablanca" star was “one of the most powerful women on Earth—I regret to say, a powerful influence for evil.”

  3. Johnson proposed a bill to create licenses for actors, actresses, producers, and directors: if a performer were convicted of, or admitted to, a crime involving "moral turpitude," their license would be revoked, rendering them unable to work in the film industry.

  4. Johnson said that the bill was common sense: "What is proposed here is a practical method whereby the mad dogs of the industry may be put on a leash to protect public morals; nothing more."

  5. Johnson's bill did not pass, and in 1972, Congress issued an apology.
