The story, featured in The Atlantic that year and written by Civil War surgeon Silas Weir Mitchell, detailed the sensations of phantom limb life.
Many readers mistakenly thought it was a story about a real person and sent donations to support the character, Civil War veteran George Dedlow, or stopped by the hospital to try to meet him.
