Additional insights we found via Radiolab

  1. The patient's arm was paralyzed prior to amputation, and the feeling of paralysis was inherited even after he lost the limb; his brain had already integrated the paralysis into its arm schema.

  2. He suffered from a phantom paralyzed limb and related elbow and wrist pain, but his doctor, neuroscientist V.S. Ramachandran, treated the pain by tricking the man's brain into thinking his still-present right arm was the missing, paralyzed left one by positioning a mirror, cardboard box, and the right arm so it appeared to be the missing limb and then moving it in specific ways.

  3. Numerous sessions like this addressed the patient's severe pain.
