Among the smallest mass-produced mechanical calculators in history, the Curta was designed by Austrian engineer Curt Herzstark while imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II.

Resembling a pepper mill, the Curta uses a crank to perform arithmetic operations on numbers selected from a series of sliders connected to gears and stepped drums.
Earning two patents for his work prior to being arrested and brought to the Buchenwald concentration camp, Curt Herzstark was forced by his captors to design a calculating machine, which was to be gifted to Adolf Hitler upon winning the war.
