The Model K—named for its construction on a kitchen table—was the first electromechanical digital binary adder, which used an electric circuit to provide the sum of a pair of zeroes and ones in binary.

Findings

Additional insights we found via AT&T Tech Channel

  1. Built as a proof of concept, the Model K processed two circuits, each of which could be opened or closed to represent a zero or a one, and provided the sum in binary, represented by a pair of lights that could turn on or off—for example, both closed circuits, or 1 + 1, output the light pattern of on-off, which represented the binary code 10, or 2 in numeral form.

  2. The Model K served as the basis for Bell Labs' Model I Relay Calculator, which incorporated 450 relays to perform multiplication and division on 8-digit numbers.
