More than 2,000 years ago, a hand-powered model of the solar system called the Antikythera mechanism—the oldest example of an analog computer—could predict solar eclipses.

Findings

Additional insights we found via TED-Ed

  1. The device, which was recovered from a shipwreck off the coast of Greece in 1900, used a series of interconnected gears to calculate the motions of the sun, moon, and known planets to forecast various celestial events.

  2. While modern computers store digital information as a sequence of zeros and ones that are converted into onscreen information, computers generally refer to any device that stores and converts information from one form to another.
