  1. Invented in Ancient Greece and greatly enhanced during the Islamic Golden Age, astrolabes are flattened versions of 3D models of the sky, or planispheres, crafted to specific latitudes, based on what stars are visible in each.

  2. After aligning a movable sight on the back of an astrolabe—the alidade—to the sun in the sky, the corresponding angle can be matched to one of several altitude circles on the opposite side of the plate, and the time of day can be determined after rotating a frame—the rete—such that the day's date overlaps with the altitude circle.

  3. By measuring the angle of the sun at its highest point in the sky with an astrolabe and comparing it to astronomical tables, users could determine their latitude.

  4. Some astrolabes included shadow squares, which enabled users to calculate the heights of and distances to objects using simple ratios, rather than more complex trigonometric functions.
