Additional insights we found via Seeker

  1. Narcolepsy not only makes people fall asleep at random moments, but it can also cause hallucinations, insomnia, and sleep paralysis.

  2. The disorder is sometimes tied to a lack of specific neurotransmitter chemicals in the brain’s hypothalamus called hypocretin, which are amino acid chains (neuropeptides) responsible for keeping you awake and preventing your dream state from coming on too quickly. Hypocretin is also sometimes called orexin.

  3. People without narcolepsy will release hypocretin during their waking hours to promote wakefulness and suppress REM sleep. With some cases of narcolepsy, the lack of hypocretin results in a feeling of constant drowsiness and poor control of REM sleep.
