Zoonotic Diseases

Zoonotic diseases encompass more than 200 diseases transmitted from animals to humans, wherein humans are usually accidental hosts. Ranging from rabies to HIV to monkeypox, this overview lists some of the most common viral threats.

Everyone has come in contact with common viruses—typically something like influenza (the common flu)—but sometimes they encounter more dangerous strains. While we're familiar with the symptoms that manifest, it wasn't until the advent of advanced microscopy that scientists could pin down the exact structure and behavior of various viruses.

Zoonotic diseases, which spread from animals to humans, present one of the most significant emerging threats worldwide. Scientists have identified around 200 viruses capable of infecting humans, and unfortunately, the number of such diseases are on the rise—at least 60% of all emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic in origin.

The Black Death refers to the first wave of the plague, which swept through Europe in the 14th century and killed 25 to 50 million people. Caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis carried by fleas (often on rats), the human toll was roughly one-third of Europe's population at the time.

The 1918–1920 flu pandemic (once called, incorrectly, the Spanish flu) killed quickly and in huge numbers, with estimates of the global death toll ranging from 50 to 100 million people. Several factors contributed to the high mortality rate: lack of antibiotics, the global disruption of World War I, and more.

Researchers believe the virus crossed from chimpanzees to humans through bushmeat practices in the early 20th century, with genetic studies suggesting the most recent common ancestor of the HIV-1 M group, which is responsible for the global AIDS pandemic, emerged around 1910–1930 in Léopoldville (now Kinshasa) in the Belgian Congo.

Coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, belong to a large family of viruses characterized by their crown-like appearance under a microscope, due to spike proteins on their surface. While thousands are believed to exist in animals, only seven are known to have made the jump to humans.

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, began with an outbreak in Wuhan, China in December 2019, and rapidly spread worldwide in early 2020. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, leading to widespread lockdowns, travel restrictions, and economic disruptions.

Viral receptors are key regulators of host range, tissue tropism, and viral pathogenesis—basically, the door locks on cells allowing viruses to invade, if they have the right key. How this process works at the microscopic level determines whether a virus is able to trigger a widespread illness in the host.
