Hypothesized by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori in 1970, the negative reaction may result from sensory conflicts in the brain, such as a mismatch between a robot's lifelike appearance and its mechanical movements.
These conflicts can be intentionally used by creators to instill a sense of discomfort, as in a horror film, or to help inform animators and roboticists on how to best create characters that will be embraced by audiences.
