Georges Lemaître, a Belgian Catholic priest who proposed the Big Bang theory in 1931, became president of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in 1960.

  1. After Edwin Hubble's 1929 discovery that the universe was expanding, Lemaître proposed that the universe must have originated from a "primeval atom" that later expanded into the observable universe.

  2. Although Lemaître perceived his model and the Judeo-Christian tradition as separate interpretations of the world, Pope Pius XII stated that the theory proved the existence of God.
