The game was invented by Albert Lamorisse, a French screenwriter who won the 1956 Oscar for best screenplay for his short "The Red Balloon."
The game was first published in France in 1957 under the name The Conquest of the World and was changed to "Risk" when Parker Brothers published it in the US in 1959.
Scholars say the game became popular because it addressed Cold War tensions.
