As of 2026, there are over 3,000 surging glaciers—about 1% of all glaciers—which are thought to have accelerated due to melting ice, reducing friction and enabling faster sliding.
Although many glaciers have been observed to be retreating as temperatures rise due to climate change, the resulting loss of snow and ice produces meltwater that can collect at the bottom of glaciers and trigger future surging.
