After a landslide, repeat activity may follow the appearance of cracks, springs of water, or dirt, sand, and rocks tumbling down from scars—exposed portions of Earth where the initial landslide began.

Findings

Additional insights we found via USGS

  1. Landslides are often accompanied by sounds of cracking wood from pushed and falling trees, shaking brush, and knocking rocks, alongside the sensation of the ground shaking from a passing freight train.

  2. Landslides may be anticipated by observing muddier water, which may result from a large amount of debris entering upstream, or by identifying changes in a stream's flow, which can be unblocked by shifts in landslide debris.

  3. If you are at risk of an imminent landslide, move to higher floors and downstream of the slide if at home, and run away from the sound to the left or right if outside.
