Avalanches, which kill an average of 27 people in the US each year, typically require mountain slopes between 30 and 45 degrees and a layer of sturdy snow atop a weak, unstable layer, which can be put into motion by a trigger.

Additional insights we found via TED-Ed

  1. The angle must be sufficiently shallow to allow snow to pile up while steep enough to allow snow to rush down quickly.

  2. An unstable snow layer can be created by hoarfrost—feathery ice crystals that form when water in the air freezes onto a snowy surface.

  3. Avalanche triggers include heavy rain and snowfall, strong winds, and surface impacts from humans or machines.
