Airports at high elevations, like Denver International Airport, have longer runways than most airports because airplanes cannot take off or land as quickly in thinner air.

  1. When accelerating, jet engines push air in one direction, and the displaced air pushes the plane in the opposite direction, but this force is lessened at lower atmospheric densities.

  2. Lift—the force that pushes airplanes up—comes from a difference in air pressure above and below an airplane's wings and also relies on the density of air, compounding the need for longer runways high above sea level.
