Scientists have found that kitchen sponges that don't appear dirty or greasy may still harbor bacteria that can cause foodborne illness, and the cleaning items should be discarded regularly, including after wiping surfaces that have come into contact with raw meat.

  1. Researchers reported in June 2026 that E. coli, Salmonella enteritidis, and Staphylococcus aureus are all adept at surviving on kitchen sponges, with a study showing that just a small number of these pathogens can multiply and establish stable populations that last for at least 14 days.

  2. Cleaning sponges to help them last longer should include running them under hot water above 158°F (70 °C) for at least 2 minutes.
