Pearls form when a saltwater oyster or a freshwater mussel coats a parasite or other irritant that has entered its shell with concentric layers of calcium carbonate and organic protein.

Findings

Additional insights we found via TED-Ed

  1. The organic-inorganic composite material from which pearls are formed—nacre—is composed of hexagonal bricks of aragonite surrounded by a fibrous conchiolin for added strength.

  2. Because the concentric layers that make up pearls are of similar thickness to the wavelength of light, they produce iridescence as light rays reflect between these layers and interfere with one another.

  3. Calcium carbonate, which forms when calcium deposits seep into rivers and oceans and react with dissolved carbonate produced from carbon dioxide reacting with seawater, is used to build coral reefs, sea urchin spines, and the shells of oysters, mussels, clams, and snails.
