The massive success and fame that came with 1951's "The Catcher in the Rye" disturbed Salinger, who grew to despise the American literary establishment.
Salinger's exit from public life, according to his son Matt, was what the writer thought would be best for his art.
Matt also said that the rumors of five proper books are exaggerated, but that there is 50 years' worth of writing and that, at some point, it "will at some point be shared with the people that love reading his stuff."
JD Salinger often wrote what he called his "squibs" or "fragments"—ordinary pieces of paper cut into eighths filled with tiny, handwritten notes—and his son has been sifting through them alongside more formal, typewritten manuscripts to prepare the work for the public.
