  1. "Pulp" novels historically referred to crime, mystery, and adventure novels that were seen as unserious reading and were cheaply produced by publishers—hence their name, which emphasized the cheap paper they were printed on.

  2. In the '40s and '50s, though, many of these publishers were also republishing classic literature in the same style, trying to sell the books to large audiences who might not see themselves as "serious" readers.
