In 1975, the Soviet Union fired a space cannon as part of testing a defense system that would prevent anyone from approaching and inspecting Soviet military satellites.

  1. The R-23M cannon was based on an aircraft weapon and had been installed on the Almaz space station—an outpost intended for military purposes, including reconnaissance.

  2. Because of the potential damage to the station from recoil and the need to reorient the entire station to fire the cannon accurately, the testing occurred hours before the planned de-orbiting of Almaz on January 24, 1975.
