Diatomite, a sedimentary rock used as a filtration material in beer, wine, swimming pool water, motor oil, and pharmaceuticals, is formed from the fossilized shells of diatoms, a type of algae.

  1. Diatomite's honeycomb structure includes thousands of microscopic pores, which enable it to absorb 2.5 times its weight in water and be used to clean up spills of hazardous liquids.

  2. It is also used to enhance coating adhesion and add strength to paints, increase water and air permeation in soils, and as a natural insecticide.
