  1. In the early '60s, New York law deemed homosexual behavior in bars to be "disorderly" and threatened closure for establishments that allowed it, though the law's definition of homosexual behavior was vague.

  2. In 1966, three men decided to test the vague definition by staging a "sip-in": They would arrive at a bar, announce they were gay, and then attempt to order drinks.

  3. The men belonged to the New York City chapter of the Mattachine Society, an early gay rights organization that preferred the word "homophile" over "homosexual" because homosexuality was then defined as a mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association.

  4. The first bar they visited closed when it learned their plans, while the second and third served them drinks.

  5. The bartender at the fourth establishment, Julius' Bar, initially did not want to refuse them service, but one of the Mattachine Society men assured him that he would cover any legal expenses incurred by the bar; the bartender then refused to serve them, citing the law.

  6. In 1967, the New York City Commission on Human Rights declared that gay people could legally drink in a bar.
