  1. When opening a McDonald’s franchise, business owners by contract had to purchase Taylor ice cream machines, thanks to a decades-old relationship between the two companies.

  2. While other fast food companies use the same brand, the McDonald’s machines are a very specific model, with notoriously fickle components that, due to copyrighted error codes, could only be serviced by Taylor.

  3. In 2019, a third-party developer created a plugin that gave franchise owners a detailed overview of what was wrong with their machines, prompting a notice from the McDonald’s Corporation that the product violated contract.
