The company began on St. Patrick's Day in 1956, when James and William Conway made their way across Philadelphia, selling green-hued ice cream.
The brothers had acquired the know-how to build the vehicle—part freezer, part parlor—while working for the Sweden Freezer Manufacturing Company.
Before Mister Softee designed the modern ice cream truck, mobile ice cream vendors jerry-rigged soft-serve machines into their vehicles, leading the machines to be quickly damaged.
The brothers were not the first to sell ice cream from a truck: Good Humor began selling its ice cream bars from Ford Model Ts in the 1920s.
