Additional insights we found via PBS

  1. Producing vanilla spice is labor-intensive—it takes about 300 vanilla orchids to produce one pound of vanilla beans—which might be why it was a secondary concern for the Aztecs, who used it to enhance the flavor of chocolate, and for the Europeans, who adopted the practice from the Aztecs.

  2. The classic flavor didn't stand on its own until the 17th century, when Queen Elizabeth I's apothecary began intentionally making vanilla sweets.

  3. Vanilla orchids can only grow between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.

  4. Vanilla ice cream was introduced to Americans in 1789 by Thomas Jefferson's enslaved chef, James Hemings.
