  2. Likewise, Hernando de Soto witnessed members of the Chickasaw tribe of modern-day Mississippi cook pork in the same way.

  3. They soon spread the technique throughout European territories, including the American colonies.

  4. The first recorded mention in English appeared in John Lederer’s travelogue of Virginia and the Carolinas in 1672.
