The moon is slowly contracting as its interior cools, creating moonquakes and lobate scarps—cliffs that are steep on one side and gently sloping on the other—as the moon's surface buckles.

Additional insights we found via Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera
Over the last few hundred million years, the moon is estimated to have shrunk by about 50 meters (160 feet) and formed lobate scarps, much like grapes wrinkle into raisins as they shrink.
Lobate scarps have been found across the moon's surface by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera and show few impact craters, suggesting they are geologically young.
Just as the moon causes tides on Earth, the planet's gravitational pull creates solid tides on the moon—distortions in the moon's shape that can raise the lunar surface by about 10-15 centimeters (4-6 inches) and impact lobate scarps.
