  1. The practice dates back to the Middle Ages in Europe and became a favorite practice of Patriots to condemn those loyal to the Crown in Colonial America.

  2. First, a person was stripped of their clothes, then hot pine tar was poured over their body, causing severe burns.

  3. After being tarred, the person would be covered with animal feathers to further their humiliation
