On March 5, 1770, British soldiers shot and killed five people in a crowd of angry colonists in Boston, which was an early flashpoint that sparked the American Revolution.
The soldiers and their captain were arrested and jailed in Boston.
Six of the eight soldiers were acquitted, while two soldiers were convicted of manslaughter and had their right thumbs branded.
