The painting depicts the five American delegates who negotiated the treaty: John Jay, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Henry Laurens, and William Temple Franklin.
The right side was intended to depict British representative Richard Oswald and his secretary, though they refused to pose.
The artist intended to give the finished painting as a gift to Congress but never completed it, so it now lives at the Winterthur Museum in Delaware.
