Thomas Jefferson displayed a bust of his political rival, Alexander Hamilton, in the entrance hall of Monticello, placed opposite his own likeness.

Additional insights we found via Thomas Jefferson's Monticello

  1. According to his grandchild, Jefferson would remark that because of the busts, the two would be "opposed in death as in life."

  2. Both busts were sculpted by Italian artist Giuseppe Ceracchi in Philadelphia in 1793 and 1794.

  3. Jefferson's bust was colossal-sized on a green marble pedestal, while Hamilton's was life-sized—a juxtaposition visitors found particularly amusing.
