The four-minute barrier was long thought to be impossible for a human to accomplish, but England's Roger Banister proved that logic wrong when he ran 3:59.4 on the Oxford University track in 1954.
Banister was already an accomplished runner—including competing for Great Britain in the 1952 Olympics—but when he broke the mile record, he was studying medicine at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London.
That August, Banister competed against Australian John Landy, who also broke the four-minute barrier shortly after Banister's Oxford race, at the Commonwealth Games in Vancouver—it was the first race featuring two people breaking the four-minute mile, with Banister edging out Landy in the last stretch.
Banister retired from competitive running at the end of that year to pursue a career in medicine.
